At Payapps, we pride ourselves on creating unique opportunities for construction industry leaders to connect, share insights, and learn from one another. Our recent Melbourne event at the stunning Eureka 89 was another step in fostering these connections. Featuring AFL legend Michael Voss as our guest speaker, the evening brought together 32 construction professionals for an inspiring and thought-provoking experience.

This exclusive event was designed to go beyond the ordinary. It wasn’t just about networking—exploring key leadership lessons, discussing challenges specific to the construction industry, and sparking new ideas for collaboration and growth.

Lessons from a Sporting Great

As a premiership-winning captain and elite coach, Michael Voss is no stranger to leading high-performing teams under pressure. Throughout the evening, he shared his experiences building trust, fostering teamwork, and navigating change—principles that resonated strongly with our guests.

Michael spoke candidly about the importance of aligning team goals, empowering individuals, and maintaining clear communication in achieving success, both on the field and off. The parallels to the construction sector were clear: just as sporting success relies on trust and collaboration, so too does the delivery of successful projects, where contractors and subcontractors must work together seamlessly.

Engaging Conversations and Shared Insights

Following Michael’s talk, attendees participated in discussions to reflect on the lessons shared and explore how they could apply these principles to their businesses. Conversations centred around topics like fostering trust with subcontractors, overcoming resistance to change, and improving communication across project teams.

These discussions also highlighted common challenges in the industry, such as managing progress claims, handling construction variations, and ensuring alignment between contractors and subcontractors. By bringing together leaders from diverse backgrounds, the event created a space for candid conversations and collaborative problem-solving.

Giving Back to the Industry

As part of the evening’s success, Payapps is also proud to donate $50 per attendee to MATES in Construction, totalling $1,600. MATES in Construction plays a critical role in supporting mental health and well-being within the construction sector, and we’re honoured to contribute to their vital work.
